Usually placed on the outside of the arm of the chair. **Q: Will this stay on a leather stuffed 12" wide arm?** A: It most likely will, but you want to have enough space under the seat cushion for the leather flap with the bar to tuck under, especially if you have a chair with narrow arms . This or enough space for the leather flap with the bar to extend, or hopefully totally extent, straight down pass the seat cushion towards the floor, on the inner arm side, so it can have something to grip to. But on the other hand, the bar may not need to tuck that much under the seat, or need to go too far straight down the inner arm, since your chair arms are wide. I'm saying this because mine didn't work too well for me, because my chair arms are only 3 inches wide, and the seat cushion is sown to my chair, (to the bottom and to the inner arm), leaving me no where to tuck the leather wrapped bar under, nor enough room to extent it downward. Plus like I said, my chair arm is only 3 inches wide. It seems like the wider the chair arms, the better, as long as it's not wider than 11 or 12 inches. However it works well on my leather couch with 11 inch wide arms. Although this couch has it seats sown on the bottom, it's not sown to the inner arm, like my chair is. This gave me enough room to fully extent the leather wrapped bar downward, giving it something to grip to. So I only use it with my couch, and it it works very well on it. **Q: Would this fit on a wide leather arm; also, my couch is an electric recliner - will this be in the way of the controls?** A: it will fit on a wide arm. had to send it back because my arms are vey shallow and cant get it far enough down in to couch to hold. Really looked like it would work on a deeper couch arm **Q: what type of wood is the tray made of?** A: Don't know but I wouldn't recommend this. It wasn't large enough for me. I know it shows you can hold a teapot and flowers on there but reality was different.
