The battery pack takes three AA batteries and so should last for a little while. They aren’t very bright but would be good for some general ambient lighting in a tent or something like that. I wouldn’t want to try to read by them.The battery box has a rubber seal around it which implies some degree of water resistance but I don’t think I’d trust it enough to let this get wet at all., especially since where the wire to the LEDs enters the housing doesn’t seem to have any such protection. It’s probably fine to have outside in dry weather but I suspect rain would give it issues.Like many of these sets of LED strings, this one has 8 different modes of operation with various fade/twinkle/chase patterns. I only ever want one “steady on”. Since the only control is a single button, you have to cycle through some of them to get to the one you want and then the rest to turn it off again. I really wish you could just long press the button to turn it steady on/off. But other than that, these do their simple job well. My kid plays sousaphone in marching band and there is a good chance these will be used to decorate the instrument at some point :)I like how the case latches closed,it seems like a pretty snug fit, safe from the elements. It comes with directions but I doubt you'd need to read them. The case has a numbered list of how the lights work.
