The combo device will still work as a modem, and essentially be responsible for one network device: this router (which would then handle all of the other connections). As an additional possibility, it seems some users have had success using their own modem after activating their XFi Complete combo device (possibly use your own equipment, and save $5/month on unlimited data). **Q: Is this the same as a netgear wifi extender?** A: I had an older NetGear extender (5 years or so, plugged into the wall, dual band). I just bought this to replace it and like it a lot better. It automatically finds the signals and keeps you going. My NG extender gave me a 2G and a 5G connection separately. So I had to constantly disconnect my WiFi on devices and choose the other when the connection was crappy or lost. No more of that!! My internet is one thing now and that's worth the price of admission. Also, love love the app so that I can actually see all devices using it. That will save AirPrint and other misery as well. **Q: Is the tp-link deco x55 better than eero mesh, more ethernet ports and faster speeds?** A: Yes, if you’re ok to invest slightly more on your home WiFi. The deco x55 is WiFi 6 mesh, while the eero mesh is WiFi 5. Deco x55 has 3 Ethernet ports per unit which means you can connect more devices via Ethernet like smart TV and gaming console. Regarding the speed, the X55 is AX3000 while the eero mesh is AC1300. You could get faster speeds with AX3000 if your devices support WiFi 6. The app allows you to see what's connected to each eero & notifies you if a new device connects to your network. There is a slight lag in the system when changing rooms or buildings. It sometimes takes a bit to switch to the closer eero device. So if your doing something online while moving from one place to the next you may have to pause what you are doing to force the switch to the nearest eero.
