Best Lego set I have ever had
Had tons of Legos as a kid and hadn't had any for 25 years until the architecture series came out and I had to have Fallingwater and the Farnsworth house. Bought this set because I love old warplanes, especially the WWI planes. I was curious how little details would be handled and I was not disappointed. The moving ailerons and elevators were an awesome touch. Having built mostly from-scratch creations forever, you get a sense of ingenuity in how the little details add up to a final product that better than the sum of its parts (pieces). This is definitely one of those sets. Kudos to the designer(s) who created this one. Only two minor quibbles - the rotary engine has eight cylinders, while the various engines used in the Camel all had nine. Also the lower wings tilted slightly up at the tips versus flat uppers in the actual. That says more about my dork factor than about any oversight from Lego though. Also, it would be nearly impossible to create a model that could incorporate those details without using some really weird pieces that wouldn't be in line with standard lego dimensions and ratios, etc. Overall 6 stars for this model if I could give 6!

Challenging project for my experienced Lego builder
I bought this for Christmas for my 12 year old who is a very experienced Lego builder. He loved the challenge - - said it was more complex than any he had done in the past and so it was very rewarding when he completed it. The flaps go up and down which make it realistic. This is a wonderful set and looks great as a display piece in his room. Best of all, he feels a great sense of accomplishment at having completed the Sopwith Camel. I recommend this for a child who is ready to go the next level of complexity, or an older child who wants to build a collector's piece.

Do not buy!
Multiple pieces broke under normal assembly. I've never had this issue before, but this set literally fell apart in my hands. I was excited for this build but don't buy it!

Good fun to build, looks great.
Arrived in good condition, instructions were clear, looks great on shelf at work! Had not played with legos in years and had a great evening putting it together. Took about 4 hours. The controllable ailerons and elevator work but only sort of is very hard to get the tension on the strings right, to much and friction prevents motion, to little and there is all slack in the strings. Still very cool build.

a kit with missing pieces!
Towards the end of the build, I ran out of propreller parts and and the rounded tip of a wing. I assume I can order them to finish the project?

Many parts missing
Assembly started fine but then many pieces were missing. Those parts were ordered and have been received but there appears to be more pieces not in the set. It's a very, very frustrating experience. I have assembled 3 trains, several buildings, Ningajo sets, and more, and none of them have been this annoying and frustrating.Very disappointed!

This is a really great looking Lego plane when finished
This is a really great looking Lego plane when finished. My son put it together with the only trouble being the stringing of the wing flaps. The detail is astonishing. The propeller is movable and the cockpit joystick moves the wing flaps. In the course of a year, the cats have knocked it apart about three times. My son simply puts it together again. (I know move it somewhere safe.) Definitely worth the money. A great gift for LEGO nerds, WWI fans, or antique plane lovers.
