It expands from about the 11" (size of bucket included) out to about 15" wide. It just fits my standard 11 gallon kitchen trash can. **Q: Does this shredder feed straight down into it? So many feed at an angle and where we use one it needs to feed straight down.** A: If pulls the paper into it in the angle that if first grabs the paper. And since it's just a small bit wider than 8-1/2", this means that you need to be careful and start the paper in straight, or it will be pulled off to the side. Then if there are too many pages, it'll jamb. I found 3,4 will still be pulled through even if crooked, but 4 or more will usually need for you to bump the Reverse button and pull it out a few inches to re-position.
