I believe the tongue is connected a ways up which would help repel water coming in near the laces. I would not expect them to be as waterproof as a rubber boot but I do wear them in the snow and rain without an issue. I didn't treat mine so the water will saturate the leather a little, I expect that if you keep up with the water repelant treatment you would do much better. THis is what the boot description says "Seam-sealed waterproof leathers cause liquid to bead up and shed from the surface, providing durable, long-lasting waterproof protection". I really do like these boots and they are the ones that I have purchased for work and around my home for the last 5 or 6 years. Hope this helps , I wouldnt stand in a puddle all day with these boots but I think if you found yourself in a consruction site with mud and puddles you would probably be in good shape, the more you care for and clean the boots the longer they will perform. To get the best timberland shoes at premium prices, buy direct from a timberland store. Amazon Timberland shoes are medium quality and do the job. They last 1/2 to a full year in construction and are $20-$30 less than premium Timberland work boots. If you are going to ruin them in several months it does not pay to get the premium ones. If you wear them around the house or out then I would get premium Timberland's direct. They will look and feel better. The inside is real leather rather than the material.It is a personal preference.
