Thought it was wrong, but eventually discovered that it is designed that way, to give enough pressure to ensure a tight fit with no water leakage. Ended up needing to use a expanding pair of pliers to get wide enough to compress the second side so that I could get the screw into the bolt. Was difficult but it worked. Once that was done was able to snug it down. Didn't screw till it wouldn't go anymore as I didn't want to put too much strain on the plastic. Tested it out and it's snug and dry. You can put a check valve in line with the drain to prevent this. Most RO’s come with an inline check valve but you can add one if you would like. The back-flow pressure of the drain valve is stronger than the drain pipe in the sink so it should prevent backup. **Q: Will it fit a 2in drain pipe? It's said 40-50mm, and 50mm is slightly less than 2in.
