That edge, when used lightly, shaves the reed. The reed's edges should be tapered to a consistent wings shape while the center 'v' shape is thicker. There is a quality commercial steel tool available for this that has specific edges to use and there is another small file that comes with a textured piece of glass for filling the backs flat. But for me, this piece of stainless steel is cost effective, works well and will last for ever. It's normally used with a CNC machine, but it works for filing Sax reeds too! That makes it perfect for this task!

I Purchased this 1/2 x 1/2 x 6 HSS with cobalt as it was the go to when making a carbide tool would be more time consuming or costly. I hand ground the tool until I had a 40 degree angle point as I have been doing for 40+ years, then finished with a diamond hone. Once in place, it cut a Poly-V groove into the 5" dia. 6061 T6 alum like butter- Keep the cutting oil flowing too! Choosing the 6 inch tool bit insured it would be held more securely in the tool post holder. 5 stars.
