Everyone wants to start out with an action figure, hollowed out double sided figurine, or thin walled toy motorcycle. Go for it. You Can duplicate almost anything. But we recommend doing this as your second or third mold, not as your first mold. So what do we mean by starting simple? Use a master part that has a flat side. It doesn’t have to be completely flat. It could be tall or short as long as one side is flat surface to it so you can set it into a simple mold box such as a cup or container. Also, look for pieces that don’t have thin protrusions coming off at different angles. You can definitely mold it, but it will take some practice, which is why simpler shapes are create a nice solid mold making experience. 2. Adhere your bottom to the bottom: Lightweight parts will float. Plastic floats, so adhere it to the bottom of your container. If your part floats in water, it will float in ComposiMold. 3. No Boiling and pour cool: Don’t let the mold making materials boil too much as it will degrade the mold making materials over time. You can also melt in a double boiler or chocolate melter. 4. Store your molds in a cool dry place in a Ziploc: How to keep your molds. Sometimes you make a mold that you want to keep. You can. Just cover your mold by placing it in a Ziplock bag or other sealed container, keep it in a cool, dry place, and it should last you several years with no problems. And of course, you can re-melt it anytime you like. 5 . Fix a mold with a heat gun: You can patch a hole in a mold by melting some ComposiMold and brushing it over the hole. I heated the putty as per the instructions, and made a mold for a Zia symbol, which I filled with red ink tinted resin. I didn't use any oil or mold release because I wasn't sure if I could clean it off the putty afterward; I was worried that the thin arms would stick and wouldn't separate from the mold putty, but the putty stays a bit flexible at room temperature, so I was able to pull it gently away from the hardened resin and it came off clean. I let the Zia cure for a few more days, then I reheated the putty and re-molded it into an oval, pressed the Zia into it, then poured some more resin with amber coloring around it. It all worked just as I had hoped, and the only problem is my own amateurish artistic talents. :-) I'm looking forward to making lots more molds. Be aware that 1.5oz is not a lot of putty. At least with polymer clay or resin. The first couple of times I tried to mold, it did ok. Around the 4th time I tried to make a mold it got extremely oily which ruined my resin. Well... ok, it'll be strictly used for polymer clay now. But the next time I tried to use it, it just crumbled. I tried and tried heating it and balling it trying to get it to stick together again but it wouldn't. Maybe it's just the small size that's poor quality since it doesn't come with special oil drops or special storage bag? I'm just really really disappointed in it at how little use I got out of it before it permanently disintegrated into rubbery crumbs and the money wasted.
