Wind noise isn't great, the mic will pick up even a light breeze. As clear as the amplification is, it completely lacks any sense of directional awareness. You might be able to forcibly pry it off but it could harm the electrical wires running through it? **Q: How well do they work without batteries ?** A: They work fine but way better with the batteries so that you can hear other talking at the range. **Q: Do they pick up game in the woods** A: They pick up and amplify sound. Amplification is controlled. One arguably can claim to hear hetter the sounds in the forest with the earmuffs. **Q: How well do these work on sustained noise such as working close to a generator?** A: I would download a decibel meter on your phone and check it. I use them for target shooting so I always wear plugs as a backup. But these feel like very high quality. I use them for UTV off-roading, and they allow just the right amount and type of sound through, but muffle sound enough to allow you to ride for hours. I rode yesterday for four hours, and they performed well both sound and comfort wise. I have a cheaper pair bought elsewhere, and there is no comparison.
