They come very hard and shriveled up but once you get them wet they poof up and are very soft for baby skin. When they dry they dry up again. My only issue is I do feel like they rip easily. However for the price and the fact it's a pack of 6, if it rips I just get a new one. Not any type of deal breaker at all. I started using these sponges when my baby was 2 weeks old and I've bought many packs and even at 10 Months, we're still using them.
