Resolved, as follows: I used a chain saw to cut an inch off the top of the plastic package, which worked perfectly. Then when I want to reclose the package I use one of the superglue tubes to put a thin line of glue around the edge of the top to reseal it. The glue works so well you'll need to use the chain saw whenever you want to open it again, so it's a good idea to keep one in your office. If you don't have a chain saw I recommend purchasing the Makita UC4051A 16" electric, which currently sells on Amazon for $235.99. I should tell you that I used a gas chain saw the first time but it sent unpleasant fumes throughout our floor and several colleagues knocked on my door wondering why there was a putrid odor emanating from beneath my door. So definitely get an electric chain saw if you don't want people bothering you. I ended up cutting horizontally along the label (front and back) and then cut slits on each side of the "bumpy areas" on the sides of the package.
