What makes the light soft and spread evenly is that it is not flush with the ceiling but lower. This allows not only direct light through the frosted glass shade but also reflected light bouncing off the ceiling. This helps to spread an even and soft light particularly if your ceiling is white. I am particularly happy with this light and it makes the kitchen light with few if any shadows. I do think it could be used anywhere in your home. It is an attractive fixture, aesthetically pleasing. Installation is fairly simple but will depend on your existing ceiling setup but they are pretty standard. My advice is to take it slowly to avoid mistakes. Everything was the correct fit. One of the best buys this year and I thought the price was fair. In my case, I have Amazon packages delivered to my local Canada Post Office for security reasons and the vendor forgot to put my name on the package! This could have ended up with the parcel being returned but I got down to the P.O. in time - this is a reminder to Amazon to see that packages are properly addressed.
