You don't need the stylus in order to write with it but it is useful. The board won't smudge when you rest your hand on it to write and the writing is pretty clear. The contrast is not as great as the picture here shows but it is very readable anyway.Using it is very simple - just use the stylus or any hard item to write with. When you want to erase, just press the erase button on top. That's it.I would have loved to be able to store multiple pages of notes in this one place but you only get one. I haven't had it long enough to know if the battery life is as eternal as they say in the product description.I was worried that when I carried it around in my purse the erase button would get pushed accidentally, but it hasn't happened yet. I have been carrying it with the case and in an outside pocket to prevent that, but the button is not that sensitive. To erase, you really have to push it firmly.For what I needed it, it was really perfect. I plan on putting velcro on the back of it and sticking it to the inside of my kitchen cabinet for easy grocery list-making.There are plenty of other ways to make digital lists - with tablets, smart phones, etc. The great thing about this product is simply that it's easy to use, incredibly light, and replaces paper for those times when you would prefer to sit at the table and just write a list with a pen. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great for practice! *by N***A on Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2012* I used this for MONTHS while practicing Japanese Kanji while I lived in Japan. It always worked flawlessly for that purpose. I could just fill the screen up with practice characters and with the press of a button, it was GONE! No more dealing with broken pencil leads, smeared ink on my hand, buying (and losing) expensive pens (I use Gel pens, at $1.50+ a pop), etc, etc.About 2 months ago I finally gave in and went back to paper for practice. Once I realized I could actually use up a 60 page paper notebook, I lost the guilt that came with buying them (The guilt you feel when you have 30 notebooks in your office, and NONE have more than 4 pages used).Even with that, I feel like I got it's worth out of it from the months that I did use it...plus I have the feeling that eventually I'm going to use it for practice in the future.Overall this is a great product. It does have MANY uses.
