This giant 251 m long had been put into service on 24.08.1940. After his training cruise, he participated in Operation "Rheinübung", sinking on 24.05.1941 the British battle cruiser HMS Hood during a combat off Greenland. Then the Bismarck, hard hit in stern, tried to reach a French port. During the pursuit begun by naval units and British aircraft, the ship was put out of action and sunk in the Atlantic on 27.05.1941.
