They protect me against the elements and against brush and even dragging my legs against exposed rock. The care instructions specifically say machine wash. **Q: Are these meant for primarily indoor winter use?** A: I have worn them indoors and outdoors. They have good traction, so outdoors wasn't a problem. **Q: Are these non slip?** A: Yes, they have non-slip soles **Q: will they roll up or compress for a carry on "personal item" bag for airlines?** A: They slightly compress.
