THey keep your hair out of your way while swimming, and to a degree protect your hair from the elements of salt water and chlorine. I have seen where people wear 2 caps - such as the Olympic swimmers, but I think that is more for aerodynamics and being streamlined while swimming. I have braided my hair and then put a cap on and it seems to help with the hair not getting too wet. I have never had my hair 100% dry using the swim cap. Sorry!
