Have these improved since 2010-1013? It seems the reviews are much better these last couple of years. Good for an active 3 year old??

I don't know what they were like in 2010 - 2013, but I bought them for my three-year-old grandson this past summer (2015), and he loves them. Perfect size. Good quality. I think you would be very safe in buying the set for an active three-year-old.

The body of the vehicles is metal

How much of it is diecast of vehicles and helicopter?

I don’t know. I bought it as a gift for my grandson a few years ago and done remember anything about it other than my grandson loved it.
