Won't pushing the tool upward scratch or damage the tip of the spark plug ?

No. The photo shows the tool in the wrong position. You pry apart to open the gap and never touch the center tip. My only complaint is that the chrome finish is soft so you do need to be gentle with the gage so you don't mar the surface. Plenty of leverage to do the job - preferred over the coin style.
