I was totally grossed out to discover that my dogs had developed tapeworms. I was even more dismayed to learn that I was looking at multiple vet trips for treatment. This is the same meds my vet prescribed, but at a fraction of the cost.A single dose kills all the worms in the dog's body right away. Within 24-hours, you won't see any more worms in the poop or around the dog's butt (gross, right?). The medicine works by interfering with the worm's ability to not be digested by the dog.The reason multiple treatments are often needed is because it's so easy for dogs to get reinfected. Make no mistake, dogs get tapeworms from eating infected fleas. Fleas get infected from eating the tapeworm segments filled with tapeworm eggs that come out in the dog's poop or crawl out of their butts (gross!). I was all in denial about having fleas (I think we had a very small infestation, and my dogs ate most of them, so it didn't seem like we had any). I'm using Home Defense pesticide inside and outside the house to control them in my yard (lots of my neighbors keep their dogs outside all the time, so I have to be vigilant about protecting my yard. Also, I take my dogs for runs in parks and the woods, and all they have to do is pick up and eat one infected flea and the process begins again.Moreover, once your dog has tapeworms, if there are any fleas in the environment, they're going to want to eat the eggs in the tapeworm segments that the dog passes, and if the dog then eats those fleas: reinfection. So picking up infected poop promptly and getting fleas under control is also important. Alas, I think the little buggers, the worm egg segments and the fleas, can live for a long time in the yard, so I like that this is a 12 pack, and I don't have to go back to the vet each month. I will probably, totally without the vet's advice, give this to my dogs for a couple of months (maybe in smaller doses later on) to make sure we eradicate these suckers from the environment. I doubt this is what a vet would tell me to do, but I'm doing it.My dogs are 55 and 60 pounds, so I just use the chart on the back of the box to figure out how much they need. The box says one pill for dogs 25-50 pounds and two pills for dogs 50-100 pounds. Since they're just over the 50 pound border, I split the difference and gave them 1.5 pills a piece (which, if my calculations are correct, ought to be enough medicine for 75 pounds). It worked. No more tapey worms.So for my dogs, these 12 pills are a 4-month supply for both dogs. Great deal! I did lots of research, and praziquantel is definitely the drug you want for tapeworms! She had dealt with some fleas (again for the first time) the month before, but I thought it was all taken care of, never knew to be on the look out for these horrid creatures.Based on some great recommendations here on amazon, I decided to give this a try, as I would not be able to get her to the vet until the weekend. They arrived the next day, and I wrapped two pills up in some cheese (she weighs 65 pounds), and my picky eater scarfed them down.Now, be warned (and some have warned about this) - be prepared for them needing to do their business a bit more than normal, and it may be on the loose side (sorry!). My pup does tend to get an upset tummy easily, so this may not happen to everyone, but we did go for some extra walks, and she woke me to go out once overnight (she never does that normally).By the next morning, 12 hours after she took her dosage, everything was coming out clean - no wiggly worms, no dead worms, nothing! Two days later, and it is like it never happened.
