They provide extra calcium. I don't think there were metals at all. You may want to google the product to be sure **Q: If I have a 3-4 gallon tank with a snail and a beta (and a moss ball) is it safe to break off a small piece of the wonder shell and use it?** A: You won't need to break the shell apart. These shells don't condition that much water. Here is what is printed on the back of the package: "For one-gallon bowls use 2 small shells. For 5-gallon aquarium use one large shell. For 10-20 gallon aquarium use one Super Size shell." **Q: Can I crush these up and get the same effect** A: Hello, Thank you for asking. Actually Wonder Shells do a lot of different things for an aquarium. One of the things they do is make the water more hard. Now, I don't know what kinds of animals and/or plants you have, but if you smash a Wonder Shell up and add it to your tank all at once, there is a possibility that the water could become Way More Hard than will be healthful for your aquarium inhabitants. So I absolutely do not recommend doing so. They melt very nicely over time and do exactly what they are advertised as doing. Have Patience!!
