Thank you, TRENDnet **Q: What is this?** A: Gig lan is good for 100 meters, about 330 feet. Beyond that the signal starts getting funky, and you have more resent packets then good packets. At some point you have almost no data movIng on your network. This goes mid span on long runs near or over the 100 meter limit. The 100 meter is cable length, not overall network length. You can out a network switch and do the same as this device. Where i found this useful was in a long segment, about 700 feet in my case. I put two of them in, one at each end of a 300 foot conduit, midspan on my run. These are powered over the lan wire *requires poe, so you dont need an outlet where you install them. They can be daisy chained to have more then 2 on a single line. They are NOT waterproof, so keep that in mind for outdoor runs. **Q: Will this device extend a standard (non-PoE) ethernet signal?** A: You could simply use a small Ethernet switch to do the same thing, and it would be less expensive.
