Can also be used for other small pets: hamsters, gerbils, etc. The platform or shelf perch, allows birds to comfortably sit and roost properly, by giving the feet the ability to relax. The flat surface also gives an orthopedic quality, having the foot extended and not gripping all the time. The smooth surface (as opposed to concrete and sand paper/rough surfaces) helps prevent pressure sores from developing when only using round perches. I'm not sure why this is. A bird rescue organization recommended this company to me. Their foot toys are a crowd pleaser and I was surprised by how much the parrots enjoy the wood perches too. I can only speak to Amazon parrots liking the perches and toys - I can't say whether other breeds will respond equally as well. It's surely worth it to try to see if your bird friends like these products as well as my bird friends do.
