There is a detent that helps hold them open but no lock mechanism. **Q: does it have a hole to be able to put it on a keychain?** A: No it does not. That said, it's kind of big for a keychain in my opinion. **Q: Is it possible to temporarily remove the knife blade for later reinstall when gifting to a younger child?** A: I have never done it but I would think so. The blade is very small.
