The socket piece has two ways for the cord to come out. It can go straight down so that the cord can come out the bottom of a lamp (hole already there) or it can come out the side when you don't have a lamp base with a hole in it. You would need a way to attach it to the lid of a mason jar...I wouldn't know how to go about doing that. It does have a support rod that attaches to the bottom of the socket, so that could go into the lid if you drilled a hole. **Q: where can i get a lamp shade that fits in with this kit?** A: You can get any lamp shade that fits on top of the harp under the finial. It is not necessary to use the harp that is in the kit if you have (or want) a shade that fits down at the bottom of the light bulb. This kit helped me achieve that. I love my new lamp! Got a top holding lamp shade from home goods to fit. It was pretty easy to put together and I’ve never put together a lamp before. The only challenge I ran into was that the top of my vase was a wide non symmetrical square so I had to improvise a way for the kit to rest on something. I got a swivel bracket from Home Depot that happened to fit and I hot glued it to the lip of the vase. The not included bracket sits just under the lip (hot glue on top of bracket and under lip to secure in place) and rests on the curve of the top of vase so it can’t be lifted out too easily. Bracket wouldn’t be necessary for a standard lamp or lamp replacement. Seems to be holding well.
