Oathbringer Part One: The Stormlight Archive Book Three

Although a fan of Brandon Sanderson, I first started reading the Stormlight Archive this year and it quickly cemented itself as my favourite book series of all time. The world, characters, story are just amazing and so detailed, if you're looking for a fantasy series to get lost in - then this is the book/series for you.

My partner loves these books he has had all parts to them great quality heavy duty good books he reads them in a short period because he is so hooked on thea story would recommend

Really good book, fantasy epic at its best!

Amazing book series, I haven't enjoyed a book as much in years. Tackles a range of subjects from poverty to slavery and handles all in such a digestible manner. I'm normally not into fantasy but I cannot recommend this book series enough.

After ‘Words of Radiance’ concluded in a dramatic and action-packed fashion that significantly progressed the overall story of ‘The Stormlight Archive’, the first part/volume of ‘Oathbringer’ feels slower and less eventful. That doesn’t make it any less interesting, however, just not, perhaps, as exciting. With the return of the Knights Radiant and the Voidbringers and the various revelations associated with this, things have become quite different in the world of Roshar as well as for the saga’s lead characters. ‘Oathbringer’ is therefore concerned with establishing what all the changes wrought by all this mean and consolidating the new positions of several characters and their subsequent relationships. Thus, this results in this book being, in many ways, a bit of a build up for things to come. It also means that Dalinar becomes more prominent, virtually taking on the mantle of main character. Kaladin and Shallan, although obviously still major characters, have less chapters devoted to them and their perspective. The emphasis is now more focussed on Dalinar’s role as a Radiant to ‘unite’ the peoples of Roshar. As such, we learn more about Roshar and about Dalinar and his background. Members of the Bridge Four team, with their increased status through Kaladin, also receive more attention and development, particularly Moash who receives some chapters devoted to him. Lift, who first appeared in one of the interlude sections in ‘Words of Radiance’ before receiving her own novella ‘Edgedancer’, is also slowly drawn into the main storyline. The significance of Oathbringer itself is, maybe, debatable in this first volume. Hopefully, and most likely, it will play a larger and more relevant role in the second. Cutting ‘The Stormlight Archive’ novels into two physical books to prevent them being too unwieldy always, of course, has the negative aspect of dividing the narrative in two at a juncture that is unlikely to be a natural break as they were clearly not written or meant to be read in that manner. As with the previous two novels in the series the first part/half generally suffers the most from this division as it has the feel of establishing things and providing a build up without delivering on it. The first half of ‘Oathbringer’ suffers from this more than its predecessors. But there is lots of promise here that looks good for the second part.

I really enjoyed the first 2 books, some really stand out moments, loved the character development, I think kaladin is a brilliant character. Part one of oathbringer though is boring. Kaladin has become a side character, he just flies about and doesn’t really do a lot, there’s no real progression in the story, I found myself reading the book just to finish it, not because I was enjoying it, that said though I like the characters too much to give up I just hope the second half is a bit better
