I can fit a tall cake with a plate, and the two side clips solidly shut the sides securely. The color is white opaque. It’s a nice, useful and substantial looking item. Definitely recommend owning one! Review: I bought this Sterilite cake container/server to use as a pie transport. Although I have plastic pie containers, they are too low to high-domed pies. The cake server I had before this was not wide enough to accommodate my glass Pyrex pie plates because they have small handles on the side. This Sterilite cake server solved my pie transport problems, even if the pie pan does slide a little inside. The bonus is that now I also have a quality container for transporting cakes and keeping them fresh without ruining their tops with plastic wrap. All you have to do is place the cake (or pie) on the tray, cover, and snap the side tabs in place. it's as easy as, ahem, pie. For cakes, I recommend using a cardboard bottom that fits almost exactly to keep the cake from sliding. The plastic construction is lightweight but sturdy. It keeps the cake from drying out without having to crush or ruin the frosting with a covering that touches it. Still, you might want to protect the cut portion with a piece of wrap. The lid and the snaps close outside the 12 inch seat. There is a grove for the lid and the snaps are on the outside of the lid. If your cake board is not more than 12 inches all will fit. I measured this with a carpenters ruler, very accurate. **Q: Will this hold a cake with three 8 inch layers?** A: It will NOT hold a normal three layer cake unless each cake layer is about 1" tall leaving 2 1/2 to 3" for frostings or fillings between the layers! This is misleading. It's 5 1/2" tall on the outside edges and approximately 6 1/8" tall towards the center (the lid is more of a dome...not flat which is why there are different height measurements. Not only that, but the cake base is raised another 3/8" which means you will lose about another half inch. **Q: Does the bottom snap on securely enought to keep Ants out?? Thank you!!** A: I haven't run into that problem but my best guess would be that it does keep ants out. The 2 snaps hold the rim of the cover securely in a groove around the bottom & will hold even the heaviest cake, but it isn't air tight so I couldn't guarantee that the ants can't get in (but they'd have to be very tiny). **Q: I'm looking for a carrier to hold an 11" tart with a fluted edge crust. The last one I got claimed to be 12", but was too small. Will this work?** A: Yes, I believe this will work for you. I got my ruler out & measured it & it measures 11 & 14/16ths. Just 2 ruler tick marks (my ruler is in 16ths) before 12". It it spacious enough to fit larger cakes (the one on the picture is 9" and there is plenty of room left for larger items). It provides an excellent storage container to keep cakes and other pastry moist and fresh. The bottom part can be used as a cake plate or other food serving tray since the silver plastic side handles are removable. It is made of thick material and is very sturdy. The cover can be secured safely in place, which makes it excellent for carrying cakes.
