The pedal and the guitar, whichever pickup is set on, are nothing without a good amp. That being said, I only use passive pickups (Di Marzio at the moment) and this pedal has never failed me. I used it on many amps (fender, peavey, marshall, EvH) and it always sounds fine to me. It feels more organic than most distortion pedals (and I tried some), and has this cutting "Dimebag" edge you're looking for. It's really designed to sound like Darrell, not much anything else. The mid scoop is really effective and the tone clearly reminds of Pantera riffs. This doesn't replace the whammy pedal to reach whistle notes, and of course, the touch of Darrell himself. Way better than the Boss Metalzone or DOD Death Metal or basically any overdrive/distortion pedal i've ever had. The only thing I can say is it doesn't seem to work that well with tube combo amps, it only seems to go really well with solid state amps which I guess makes sense since tubed amps really aren't for over the top gain, hence why dimebag used solid state. ### ⭐ Sounds like it's using a sound compressor but still has so ... *by P***E on March 16, 2018* I regret buying this. The graphics on the cano pattern are lame and a great aluminum casing is covered in plastic. Tone wise it is awesome and it sounds very close to what you hear on pantera records. It fizzles out on leads. Mxr could greatly improve on this pedal by adding a leads footswich and losing the terrible graphics.
