Very easy. Hold charcoal with pliers leaving 1/2 of charcoal exposed and light the exposed end with 2 matches. One or 2 corners will be red. Rest on a incense holder for a minute or two as the rest of the charcoal becomes hot. BTW - I have had this incense for over 15 years and it still will light. **Q: Can I use this charcoal like the odor absorbing bamboo charcoal? Can I place in closets or bathrooms to control moisture and odor?** A: I have no idea if it will absorb moisture or odor. I use it for incense purposes (after lit and smoldering I place frankincense on it).
