Review: A no-frills ink-jet printer that plain works - I literally bought this because it was the cheapest printer I could find brand new. Raise your hand if you did the same... My retired mother needed a printer for her desk for the infrequent document here or there that she may need to print out. This was the cheapest one. I bought it. Surprise, it's actually a pretty darn good printer. Quality and fit & finish are just as good as the high dollar Epson printers I looked at in the local Staples. Design and looks wise, it's a very attractive piece, with touches of matte and gloss black here and there. The screen is a cool feature and is easy to read and navigate through. Setup was a breeze (as it should be for anyone installing a printer in this day and age). The included install software worked well and didn't include a bunch of bloatware, which in itself made me happy. Print quality is average for an ink-jet printer. Colors are vivid and blacks are black. The printer spools up quick and docs print quick, printer software isn't clunky or obtrusive. Copy function works well and could prove useful. Overall, it's exactly what you'd expect a $50 ink-jet printer to be. How reliable and trouble free it will remain after a few years, we shall see. I am confident in it and don't regret the purchase at all. Its doing its job nicely.
Review: Press the back button and buy another brand. - This is my 3rd Epson printer in a decade and will be my last. I've had this printer for 2 years. At first there were no 3rd party inks available so I had to buy the overpriced OEM inks. The problem here is Epson printers clog constantly and cleaning the head burns ink fast. Then the OEM cartridges are only partially filled to begin with. The fact the "XL" carts are the same size proves that. This printer clogged more than any Epson I've had in the past. Often had issues with the WiFi disconnecting as well. Scan a page to PC and 15 seconds later printer is disconnected. >< Finally 3rd party inks arrived and I was saved. Better longevity at 1/4 the price and no noticeable degradation in quality. Fast forward a year and I made the mistake of allowing the printer software to update itself. Immediately it stopped recognizing the ink cartridges and fully disabled itself from any action until I inserted an official Epson cart. Even though the supreme court already came down on printer manufacturers saying they cannot do this Epson still does. Time for a multi billion dollar fine... After some research I've discovered Epson is the most aggressive in this practice. I let it go for several months and purchased a Samsung laser printer that has been ridiculously more reliable, but it's monochrome only. I needed to print something in color recently so I decided to take the time to force the printer into recovery mode and force a firmware downgrade. I'm not buying $60 in ink to print 5 pages, especially when I have a fresh set of carts in the printer and 2 more still in packaging. Success! Printer once again recognizes the carts but heads were clogged badly. Ran the "clean print head" function many times which has NEVER actually worked. No effect. I actually took the time to DISMANTLE the carriage enough to remove the print head for cleaning, rinsed it twice with warmed distilled water, gobs of dried ink came out. Reassembled, inserted fresh carts and heads are still horribly clogged. Thank God I didn't dump another $60 on official carts again. With all the issues I've had with Epsons constantly clogging, this one especially, shady updates to force you into an ink monopoly, spotty wifi, and horrible cartridge capacity I will never purchase an Epson product again. TLDR: Nothing but problems with anything that says Epson on it.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Compact, lightweight, budget choice for dorm room
*by A***K on June 23, 2016*

I was looking for a all-in-one printer for my daughter's dorm room. I had only a few requirements. First, that it be a small enough unit to fit into a small room and moved easily. Second, that it be able to copy, print and scan. Third, that it have fairly inexpensive ink costs. Fourth, that the print quality would be good enough for everyday printing. Fifth and finally, that the printer not cost more than seventy dollars. In the Epson Expression Home XP-430 I got exactly what I was looking for and then some! I paid sixty dollars and got everything I wanted in terms of features and performance to meet the needs of a college student. ----------------------------------------------------- What I like about this printer... 1. Easy to setup and use. 2. Wireless printing from smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers. WiFi Direct means no wired connection is necessary. 3. 100 sheet paper capacity is very generous. 4. XL ink (black) for this printer costs less than forty dollars and if the printer setting is not on the highest quality (not needed for most text based school papers), the ink lasts a long time. 5. Individual ink tanks can be replaced and a 288 (color) pack is about twenty-seven dollars which seems reasonable to me. I also use refurbished inkjet cartridges in my printers which saves money. 6. Only 9.3 pounds - this printer is very easy to carry or move. 7. Small footprint: 11.8" x 15.4" x 5.7" is 'ultra-compact', yet fully functional as a print-copy-scan option. 8. 2.7" color screen on the front of the printer makes navigating the functions of the printer easy to do. 9. Built-in SD card slot is great! 10. Works with AirPrint, Google Cloud Print and Epson Connect. 11. Supports Windows 10, 8, 8.1 and 7. 12. MAC compatible. 13. Scan to Facebook makes photo or document sharing easy. 14. Templates for printing calendars are part of the built-in software. Additionally you can correct red-eye in photos before printing. 15. Durable enough for daily light to medium use. 16. The price is fair for what you're getting, and it comes with a 1 year warranty. Epson Customer Service is great if you need them too! 17. Comes with setup-CD, but you can also go to the EPSON site to get the installation download. The address: [...] There is a how-to setup video, manuals and how to contact Customer Service if needed. Drivers, Utilities and Firmware updates are all found on this page as well. NOTE: I downloaded the software directly to my daughter's laptop (Windows 10). 18. Good FAQ section on the EPSON site regarding this printer. Answering questions about setup and functionality of this printer. ----------------------------------------------------------------- What I wish was better... 1. NO printer cable included. You must supply your own if you want a wired connection to a PC. 2. Print speeds are not blazing fast. 9 ISO (black) 4.5 ISO (color) will not win awards! 3. Memory card reader functionality could be better if it included more options besides just a SD card slot. 4. This prints photos, but it's not a 'photo printer' in my opinion. It'll do it, but the process will guzzle ink. I'd suggest digitally sending the photos out to somewhere that you can pick them up instead. Flyers and colorful diagrams are OK though. 5. No double-sided printing, but you can manually do that so it's really not an issue for most people. NOTE: There are updates that need to be installed to the printer after unboxing and can be found on the Epson site. Utilities including: Scanner Driver and EPSON Scan Utility, Epson Software Updater, Epson Connnect Printer Setup Utility, Epson Easy Photo Scan, and Event Manager Utility. There's also a FIRMWARE update that I suggest doing first. It came out on 6/7/16 and should help with setup issues. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is this printer 'perfect'? No. Is this printer a good choice for a dorm room? Yes! It's compact, works as expected and has very good features like WiFi Direct printing supporting both Windows and Mac devices. It's high-capacity paper tray means not having to constantly put paper in the thing, and ink costs are reasonable. Setting the printer to a lower quality print setting saves on ink costs even more. I'm happy with this purchase as it ticked off all the boxes for me without a need to compromise. It doesn't come with all the bells and whistles of some printers, but it's a quality unit that will satisfy a home user looking for a compact printer for everyday printing, copying, and scanning needs with a few perks. ---------------------------------- -------------------------------------
