The illumination is MUCH more even when it comes from all around.But the really great thing about this magnifier is the fact that it can be used either as a standard handheld unit, but then also quickly folds out on its own stand so it can be used hands-free. That feature really makes this magnifier stand out - no pun intended.My only gripes about this product are relatively minor: first, the LED ring light isn't waterproof, so you must take care when cleaning the lens not to let water get in (if it does, no real harm, but the lights may not work until it's dry again), and second, when using it in stand mode, the top joint/hinge that angles the lens is a little weak, with no screw available to tighten it down. This means the lens will sometimes slowly droop a little from where you set it. It's not loose or floppy, just a bit weak for the weight of the lens.It comes with a nice soft bag to protect the lens. However, it fits VERY loosely and falls off too easily. A spring-bead on the lasso would fix that.Rechargeable batteries seem to work just fine in this unit and last a good long while.
