After carefully priming and painting the surfaces, I planned to brush on Rustoleum Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Spar Urethane from a quart container to seal the cutouts. Imagine my horror when the urethane-dipped brush SMEARED my paint! It was only the black paint, too, which was so odd. To resolve this issue, I bought a spray can of the same product and used it as a base coat first, then I continued with brushing on the urethane without any issues. I did one coat of the spray, then two additional coats brushed on. I could have used only the spray can for all the coats, but I had already invested in the quart container. And if I was spraying on, I probably would have done four coats total. Does it stick to the paint? Does it yellow over time?** A: Kate, I've used on outdoor things such as gnomes, large metal butterflies over the last 8-9 months without any yellowing. It does stick to the paint. Hope this helps. **Q: Can this be used on metal to protect it from sun and rain?** A: yes, you can use this for metal but I found a better product for outdoor protection. It is Modern Masters Master Clear Supreme. You will have to redo the Varathane every year as the sun will wear it down. **Q: I did a white solid stain on an oak dining room set---------would this be good for that?** A: Probably but I dont think I would use a spray on dining table **Q: can i spray this on** A: The can directions don't mention spraying this product but rather suggest brushing it on.
