I first discovered Rick Steve's Guides a few years ago when travelling to Spain. In my view, his guides are essential and on-the-go-friendly, supplementing the bulky Fodor and Rough Guide travel books which I leave at home when I head for the airport. Review: Once things calm down in Istanbul, hope to try it out - Very in depth review of Istanbul - gives very good detail on local customs, what to do in a short period of time, practical shopping tips. Unfortunately with the recent unrest, had to cancel our vacation. Not that we were ever at risk of miss seeing the Hagia Sophia or the Blue Mosque without this book, but we probably would have not bought a Museum Pass; or taken the Public Ferry Bosporus to the Blace Sea and a taxi back to save time; or had in one place what's open on what day of the week. Also, I got it on Kindle, which made it easier to reference anything using the links and the search function.
