Speakers don't have watts... Watts is how the power from an amplifier is measured. More on that below... Speakers DO have a power capacity. In other words, how much power they were designed to handle. But people like big numbers so manufacturers of cheap, mass market speakers that an audio buff wouldn't usually buy have big, fancy "1 Bazgillion Watts" numbers on the boxes. Back to the amplifier that produces the watts: amplifiers/stereos are historically advertised as a certain wattage. The problem comes because packaging will display the watts in one of two(usually) or three(the third isn't seen much these days) different ways. One is what quality manufacturers will list- example as "100 watts RMS at 0.8% THD" which contains information that tells you a lot. Second, is "music power" or "music watts" which will say something like, "240 watts of POWER!" which tells you nothing. Was that 240 watts just before it melts down, blew the speakers and it caught on fire?! The former, 100 watts RMS, in its most banal essence says that it has 100 watts of output with almost no (0.8%) Total Harmonic Distortion. Lots of power, clean sound. The RMS indicates an electrical formula protocol to determine that power rating. The latter, 250 watts of power, tells you nothing. In fact, a sharp geeky guy or gal with an electrical meter and a calculator could probs test it and find that it's only maybe 30 watts RMS! Or ten. Or 50 if you're lucky? You don't know because there is no qualifier. Music Power does or is supposed to relate to Watts RMS and it might sometimes, but the point I'm making with this extreme example is that unless the watts are quantified you don't know what that power means. It's like saying, "I got some milk" but was that a gallon of milk? a quart of milk? or a half pint of milk? Back to the speakers and the "appearance" of handling lower watts. Higher end speakers are not rated at "music power" watts, they are rated at Watts RMS. Real power. They don't try to deceive their buyers because they know their buyers are educated and they know their buyers will know that actually the "lower" rated speaker will handle more clean RMS watts than the cheapo that was advertised at maybe triple the watts. They don't deceive their customers. Summary: - speakers don't have watts, amplifiers do. - low distortion ( <1%) amps rated at "less" watts output will actually sound better and can play louder than cheapo amps which are often rated at "X" Watts at 10% distortion - low distortion, "lower" power amps are less likely to blow a speaker than a distorted high power amp - speakers that don't list the Watt handling in RMS are put out by companies trying to get you to buy a cheap product by deceiving you. The stock holders thank you in their minds after the CEOs say, "gotcha!" - you don't need a speaker that handles 200 Watts RMS if you only have a 20W per channel stereo head unit in your car. But there are some cheap speakers that are worth something. The heavy magnet Scosche 5-1/4" are darn good for their size and price for example! Are there better ones? You betcha, but they come with a much bigger price tag attached. But a high price (or certain brand name) doesn't guarantee you a good sound either, yet it often does just that. **Q: Do they come with wire harnesses for 2002 chevy tahoe?** A: I have the same vehicle and I picked up the plug and play harness that will make the install much easier.
