Even today, cognac is mainly served in wide tulip-shaped glasses - in spite of the disadvantages which this traditional shape has for the enjoyment of cognac. The differences in color, aroma and taste are the features by which the quality of a cognac is judged. The finely tuned shape of this glass harmonizes the aroma and the taste, tempering the alcohol and the stringency of the palate and emphasizing the bouquet. The flute-shaped glass allows its contents a very small evaporation surface. You will be surprised to detect no pungent fumes but delicately balanced aromas reminiscent of a summer meadow. These are a bit heavier than the hand-built glasses, so are more durable, which might be a good thing if you're not super careful with your glasses. Also, these are LEAD FREE. I mention that because a lot of people seem to ask the question. The entire Riedel line from 2016 on is lead free, but there is still some older stock out there. The sticker on the glass says "crystal glass" which is their way of saying "no lead." Finally, these go through the dishwasher just fine, though you want to be careful that they don't bang up against anything, and you don't want to use too much soap. The dishwasher soap will probably etch the glass eventually if you wash them a lot. Riedel actually recommends a dishwasher over hand washing because it's actually much easier to break the glass when hand washing than in a dishwasher. I can attest to that from experience. I've never had one break in the dishwasher, but I've broken a couple of them when hand washing. These glasses are approximately 2" at their narrowest point. The ice balls and whiskey stones with which I am familiar are considerably smaller than this and should fit just fine. **Q: Are these lead free crystal and where are these made?** A: On the amazon product page I see a California Proposition 65 warning, so I don't think they would be lead free.
