    Two of My Favorites from Unleashed

Century Media's Unleashed combos are all good deals for fans, including this one with Shadows in the Deep and Across the Open Sea.  Both album covers are included in the booklet, as well as images for all the others they'd released up through Warrior.  It also has notes from Johnny Hedlund for Shadows and Open Sea.  As for the music, Shadows in the Deep is my favorite Unleashed album.  Every song has great riffs and the production is very heavy.  It's sort of like the atmosphere of Black Sabbath's Master of Reality transferred to death metal.  Shadows, though, is not just straight-up death metal.  The rock n' roll sensibilities Unleashed had shown on their first album are evident here on songs like The Immortals, Land of Ice, and the title track.  Throw in the cover of Venom's Countess Bathory, and you've got a brutal, but also hard-rocking, death metal album.Across the Open Sea boasts more excellent examples of the Unleashed brand of rocking brutality, beginning with the mid-paced To Asgaard We Fly, the slow Open Wide, and then the speedy I Am God. This mix of tempos continues throughout the album and makes each song distinct. You never get the feeling that the songs all sound the same. This release has heavy, catchy riffs, high-speed solos, and a brash attitude unlike any other in Swedish death metal. I think it's one of their top three or four albums.  The production is not quite as heavy as Shadows, but the quality of the songs makes up for it.  I had both of these titles on cassette tape back in the day, both long gone, so this double-album release was a perfect replacement.
