Flat, and not expandable. It could carry 10-15 wires, a small box of hex screws, and several screwdrivers. Plus, a couple other small things, like Travel toothpaste or lotion, etc. I bought this because I work out of our SUV, so Organization & reorganization is a constant self-requirement. Consolidation of little wires/phone splitters, and RJ45 Couplers/pens which can easily roll down between the seats, in particular.
