I place my dogs harness on then attach the leash. I wrap the leash around the bar that is directly above the dog on the treadmill. BUT do not EVER tie the leash with a knot. If something happens you will need to be able to quickly release the dog from the leash. I wrap it once across the bar. I pull it taut to give instruction to move the dog forward then I relax the leash to instruct they dog that it is properly following the command. Hopefully this helps.
