I use this after sharpening and Honing with steel. Smoothen the edge. You can feel it when testing cutting through paper. Lessens the "grabbing" feeling as the knife goes through paper. Expect Metal streaks to appear on this white ceramic rod. I don't mind cleaning/wiping it with warm soapy sponge after every use. Happy with how it makes my knives aligned and sharp. If you have invested in a good kitchen knife, you will need this to care for your knife's edge. Review: The ceramic length of 10-5/8"" was perfect for my block - As at least one other review said, this knife was too thick to fit in the knife block but I bought anyway knowing this would not be a problem with my tools. I solved this in about 5 minutes with a spade drill bit. The ceramic length of 10-5/8"" was perfect for my block. The ceramic actual diameter is 1.63 cm (.642"). I had to use a .75" (3/4") spade bit in my drill since the .625" (5/8") was slightly too small. I drilled block from both ends to clear entire hole with smaller bit and then re-drilled with the 3/4" bit. After the first use the ceramic feels like it is actually doing something as far as 'bite' and the knives are sharper. Length is just about perfect for the way I sharpen my up to 8" knives. If you are a beginner like me be sure to research how and when to use this type of honing rod. It is not a sharpener but a honing rod that corrects the edge profile. Ceramic is best for slicing. Go with steel for chopping knives.
