Part of the problem was an uneven saddle but the original pickup fell apart. I replaced the saddle and installed the new pickup. It actually sounds pretty good through my PA. I play in bars alot so having a cheap but effective replacement is essential. I haven't used other well known or pricey brands I've been playing this guitar on the circuit for about 8 years. Had a pre-existing fishman pre-amp to run this into.
