Comprehensive and Informative, but Missing A Bit
The "Farm and Workshop Welding, Third Revised Edition" is a great resource for anyone looking to learn or improve their welding skills. The book is packed with over 400 step-by-step photos that make it easy to follow along and understand the techniques. It's particularly strong in covering the basics and common welding practices, providing a solid foundation for beginners and a good refresher for more experienced welders. One thing I really appreciate is the clear and straightforward explanations that help demystify the welding process. The tips on avoiding common mistakes are invaluable and have already saved me time and frustration. The book falls a bit short when it comes to more modern techniques. I was hoping to find more information on methods like flux-cored welding, but these are either briefly mentioned or not covered in depth. This makes it feel a bit outdated in some areas, especially for those looking to explore the latest advancements in welding. It's a comprehensive and informative guide that excels in teaching traditional welding methods. If you're looking to master the basics and avoid common pitfalls, this book is definitely worth it. Just be prepared to look elsewhere for more current welding information.

As Helpful As Can Be
Since there really isn’t a way of reading yourself into the techniques and performing welds—a good reference & guide is only as good as you make use of it, helping you while you practice hands-on welding. It does a tremendous job at teaching in-depth on the technical aspects such as the proper rods, abrasives, gas & anything that can be funneled down to strict information needed. I did read through it and coupled with a YouTube swath of Essential Craftsman, AvE & Weld.com — this gave me a great intro and laid the groundwork that I need. I’m a wood carpenter and won’t be doing this for a profession. Anyhow I’ve found im going to use this book most as a reference I’ll turn to when I’m doing any welding projects. It’ll help me make decisions, straighten out some technique along the way & etc. Great resource!

Hopeless proofreading/editing damages credibility
Decent beginner book, but riddled with proofing errors. For example, the chapter on MIG welding is very clearly supposed to be "MIG/MAG Welding" - but throughout it's referred to as "MIG/MIG", obviously a global search and replace done by a careless person. A quote, "Instead Metal Active Gas (MIG) welding is the proper term...Although MIG/MIG is the proper moniker..." It's like this throughout: typos, grammar errors throughout on almost every page. Two stars off is harsh but the appalling editing and proofing here means you can't immediately trust what you read and that's a problem in a technical manual.
