Inspiring, provocative, prophetic, and enigmatic, Utopia is the literary masterpiece of a visionary statesman and one of the most influential books of the modern world. Based on Thomas More’s penetrating analysis of the folly and tragedy of the politics of his time and all times, Utopia (1516) is a seedbed of alternative political institutions and a perennially challenging exploration of the possibilities and limitations of political action. This Norton Critical Edition is built on the translation that Robert M. Adams created for it in 1975. For the Third Edition, George M. Logan has carefully revised the translation, improving its accuracy while preserving the grace and verve that have made it the most highly regarded modern rendering of More’s Renaissance Latin work. “Backgrounds” includes a wide-ranging selection of the major secular and religious texts―from Plato to Amerigo Vespucci―that informed More’s thinking, as well as a selection of the responses to his book by members of his own humanist circle and an account by G. R. Elton of the condition of England at the time More wrote. “Criticism” now offers a more comprehensive survey of modern scholarship, adding excerpts from seminal books by Frederic Seebohm, Karl Kautsky, and Russell Ames, as well as selections from stimulating and influential recent readings by Dominic Baker-Smith and Eric Nelson. In the final section, on “ Utopia ’s Modern Progeny,” the opening chapter of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World is now complemented by excerpts from another great work in the complex tradition of utopian and dystopian fiction, Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness . Throughout the Third Edition, the editorial apparatus has been thoroughly revised and updated. An updated Selected Bibliography is also included.

Utopia (Third Edition)(Norton Critical Editions) is the best edition
These Amazon reviews are mostly unhelpful (especially given that the lead review is not about *any* edition of More's Utopia). What the reviews should deal with is how the different editions differ from each other, how the translations are, what the extra information is, etc.The Norton Critical edition is a fine modern translation (do not, I'd suggest, try to read any edition that reprints the 16th century English translation, which is historically important but inaccurate and uses obsolete English). It includes *all* of *Utopia*, which includes Book I and Book II (which almost all editions include) as well as extra material, published with the first four editions of *Utopia* from 1516 to 1518 -- letters about the book by More and other humanists. The Norton Critical Edition also includes interpretive essays on the *Utopia* (which can be helpful because it is a complex little book -- while we may think of a utopia as a perfect society, Utopia is not [and I think was not intended to be] perfect; More is a playful satirist; More uses traditional rhetorical methods which most people no longer know or recognize; etc.)There are other good translations around, but for me (as a professor, a utopian scholar, and someone who would like to see More's *Utopia* read widely, I think the Norton Critical Edition (third edition) is the best popularly priced edition available.

An enlightining book
This book is not easy to unnderstand for beginners or people who are not familiar with the complexity of Thomas More's character. He was a multifaceted man, a statesman but also a catholic. The two sides of Thomas More reflect in this wonderful world he created, they intertwine and often challenge each other, puttng the reader inside this utopian world but also inside the author's mind and soul. What struck me the most was More's authenticity and how modern his thoughts may still be seen. After reading this book, you won't believe how modern his ideas are.

Bonne édition
Bon respect du texte et de l'esprit de Thomas More. Une choix d'illustration de couverture inspirant. Une oeuvre toujours aussi moderne, elle n'a pas pris une ride.
