Quite apart from the hygiene issues, the foam handle cushion wouldn't last too long. I soak ours in an old bucket with disinfectant from time to time, then rinse it off. I also taped the foam at either end onto the handle because it shifts. That said, this is by far the best litter scoop I've ever used or seen. P.S. I must remember to check with fellow cat parents about how they clean their scoops before accepting a cup of coffee or glass of wine from them!!!!
