    Excellent and Developmentally Appropriate

*by R***Z on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 15, 2021*

I bought this book when I was pregnant with my third. I was getting a lot of questions from my 4.5 year old & 6 year old girls & I felt more comfortable answering their questions using a book as a guide. I found this book to be developmentally appropriate with just the right amount of information. I tore out the last page which provides more detail because my 6 year old can read pretty well & I wasn’t ready to broach the topic of sex with her yet. I did save the page though because the simple explanation it provides is something I will find useful for later on. The book does talk about the sperm and the egg coming together to make a baby and explains that the sperm comes from the father’s body and the egg come’s from the mother. It then says that when “it’s time to make a baby these two bodies fit together” and that “the sperm finds the egg.” Naturally my six year old asked me how the two bodies fit together - I answered truthfully by saying that I will discuss it with her later when she is older and moved on. Hopefully that’s an adequate enough answer for now! I also got the books “What’s In There: All About Before You Were Born” and “Who Has What: All About Girls’ Bodies and Boys’ Bodies” by Robie H. Harris. Unlike this book, “What’s In There” focuses more on the baby’s development in the uterus so the two books really complement each other. The last page touches on adoption which I appreciate because my girls have friends who were adopted. “Who Has What?” focuses on the difference between male and female bodies. All three books provide just enough information for younger kids and pretty much cover all they need to know (or at least from my perspective all I am comfortable with them knowing for now).

Unhealthy and oppressive views about sexuality

*by J***D on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 11, 2020*

I am sending it back for one very important reason. The page where the sexual act is described says the following sentence, “When its time to make a baby, the bodies fit together”. To me, this sentence indicates that sex is only for making babies. I do not want my child’s first understanding and sex to be about “when it’s time to make a baby”. I want my child to grow with healthy and positive views about sex, and not think that it’s something you only do when it is time to make a baby. I would prefer a book that explains love, and the desire to give yourself to your beloved, and how sometimes, this leads to a child. Not all children are planned, and no, sex is not only for making babies when we plan it. We need to stop telling children that, or they will grow up to think sex is wrong or inappropriate when it’s not for making a child.I also don’t love the pictures or the art work.Positive things: loved the way they said - “the bodies fit together”. Beautiful description without getting into too many details for a very young child.Liked that it explained how the baby grows in the womb, and how it used scientific words like sperm, egg and birth canal.Overall, book would be fine if they changed the sentence “when it’s time to make a baby” to “when a man and a woman love each other, their bodies fit together, and sometimes, that makes a baby”.

Perfect but skip the last page

*by T***S on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 1, 2022*

Perfect amount of information to give a 5 year old about where babies come from (just skip the very last informational page).
