Everything you want to know about a root cellar
Another practical guide in the series on how to build and maintain a root cellar. I was intrigued because I remember my great grandmotherโs root cellar which was in a hillside behind her kitchen. I was always amazed how it stayed cool in the summer.

Easy to understand understand. Don't complicate things and you'll do fine.
Great! Really easy to understand! I may try it out. Being female, I'm a little afraid to but maybe I'll learn to use a back hoe first. That's the only thing stopping me now. I made the mistake of not buying a house with a place to go in a high wind storm.

Very detailed but is it enough?
The author does an excellent job laying out the process and the materials needed. Itโs not a set of blueprints, though, and we have not yet tried to build from it. Even though my husband is a former Seabee and Iโm a high-energy woman with a construction background I found a few of the steps to be confusing or incomplete. Yes, I recommend this book but only if youโre an experienced builder. (I am not).

Great learning tool!
There is a series of these little pamphlet booklets. They are an average of 30 to 32 pages long. They all are on a wide range of do it yourself home survival topics. I am not a "preper" or anything like that but I do want to have a more productive garden and be able to store what I harvest more efficiently. I want to be able to store what my husband hunts and what I grow without having to rely on electricity because I have lived in hurricane prone areas and snow storm areas were power was lost for hours, days, even a week once, and we have lost a lot of valuable food. These pamphlets are awesome to help you learn what you need to look into. They do not give many answers but are awesome blueprints to what you need to look into for what you want to do. I have learned a lot of what I wanted to do from these, then go to the library to borrow the books with the information I need! We are slowly collecting the whole series.

Limited information
The book is mostly about building a root cellar of one particular, design and construction. written with great detail into the building process, materials used, and building instructions. If you donโt have construction experience, it would be of great help. If youโre looking for alternative methods of having a root cellar, and not just building one of concrete block and treated lumber you may to find additional information in your search. I like some people wonโt have the time to do it this elaborate. However, at the price charged, it would be worthwhile for most people, Iโm keeping the book. There is useful information for anyone looking into doing a root cellar. And will add to my search.

Root Cellar
Haven't had the chance to try this yet as we don't own our house but it gave me an idea just dig in the ground when the ground is warn in the spring or in the fall before the winter settles in and put a garbage pail in the hole with a tight cover on it and put your vegetables in to keep then for storage. You potatoes and carrots separately in different bins and put straw around the bottim of the bins then put the vegetables in and cover them with more straw this will help keep you produce cold enough but not freeze them so you can have food through out the winter.Oh and you don't need a big yard or big garbage pails get something deep enough to read in or make it deep but have away to grab your produce and keep count of it too. Just an experiment mind you I have never done this but am going to try it in the fall and perhaps a few things in spring I will try and use like a refridgerator that will keep my produce cold in the summer and then to keep them warm in the ground for the winter storage. So I will let you know how it turns out meanwhile you can experiment too thxx again medicine P.S. I hope to get our green house built in the spring so I can get all our transplants into it for the early spring to hold in until May 15 out here that would be for our warm crops. After we planted our cold crops from our other cold frame that I would like to also get built in the spring for both out cold spring and fall crops. The in ground storage bins we would use for our produce of vegetables and fruit like our apples to hold in after harvesting" hopefully they grow abundant this year."

Great Value
Very clear and easy read for someone who is not a professional contractor. This book is inspiring in its approach to building one very specific root cellar. There are guidelines for extrapolating the design and changing it, but they give you all the measurements and instructions to create exactly this root cellar. Even if you don't want to build a root cellar, but are interested in what it would take, this book is cheap and authoritative on the nuts and bolts involved in creating a root cellar from scratch.
