The solids could include any element but mostly or possibly totally things that are not harmful. In a municipal water system in the US it will definitely contain some chlorine or fluorine. To tell exactly what elements are in your water would require a machine that would be in the millions. For that you are can send your water to a lab. Be careful though or they may only do a test for bacteria and viruses. Find out what they are going to test for. In the US we have the best water standards of any place on earth. Most countries try but can not achieve our standards. If you have a water filter, a TDS meter is useful to tell you when to change the filter. That is what I use mine for. Some people use them with aquariums. Other than that you probably would have no use for one. You may want to look at the EPA site for drinking water. http://www.epa.gov/dwstandardsregulations . Many people complain about their regulations but I personally hate to think what this country would be like if they were not monitoring things for the good of all of us. **Q: Does this unit need to be calibrated before use in a testing solution?** A: It can be tested with distilled water which should read zero. I have used it to test silver, wonderful results. I also used it to test our filtered water and found that I need to replace our filter! Wasn't expecting that. I needed to filter the kitchen tap water and he recommended that I buy a water quality gauge to verify the resulting improvement in water quality. The gauge is easy to use and gives instant results. It did the job of verifying that my new filter did improve tap water quality.The gauge has built-in compensation for temperature. Therefore, it gives different water quality numbers for cold and ambient water. Cold numbers are smaller and smaller is healthier. Water quality is measured in terms of total amount of dissolved solids (TDS) in parts per million. I guess more minerals dissolve at ambient temperature?Some the gauge's measurements don't make sense, though.
