If my niece doesn't want it, I do. It's a very visual book. There are no written instructions: it is just step by step drawing - from the first piece, building to the final result. I remember doing something similar when the Dallas Times Herald ran a comic strip called Arty. I loved that and still have the ones I cut out. This book is somewhat similar except that each drawing is on a page. Once you see it, it seems so simplistic that drawing an animal is possible. Lee Ames approach virtually guarantees good results. There is a lot of good info here, for both the beginning artist and more seasoned, alike. Both kids and adults would find this book helpful. Like all of the Draw 50 books, there is a short text intro/letter to the reader and then just page after page of step-by-step, non-text projects. The steps are easy to follow, with new lines highlighted, each step. It is easy to do. However, even for more experienced artists, these project provide good warm-ups, brain candy, refreshers, etc. The excercises do teach how objects can be built up and guidelines can be used. The author himself points out that this is not the only way to draw animals and an artist's objective should not be to only "copy." However, these projects provide a good foundation to be applied to original works.
