I’ve finally removed from my shelves the unremarkable sound of the individual CDs of Kiln House, Bare Trees, Heroes Are Hard To Find, etc., I bought decades ago. I can now immerse myself in these sometimes flawed but still rewarding albums from the band’s so-called “wilderness years.” John’s superb bass guitar lines and Mick’s smart, energetic drums/percussion sound terrific throughout. Tasty lead guitar riffs and rhythmic fills -- most notably from Peter Green (for just Then Play On), Danny Kirwan, and Bob Welch -- are clear and punchy. For the post-Green albums, Kirwan and Welch penned and sang a good number of first-rate songs that are every bit as worthy as those we know and love from those classic Buckingham-Nicks days. Across these seven studio albums, the music features tones and nuances completely missing from earlier CD incarnations. The CD of the live set is a welcome addition too. Best of all, this lifelong fanboy of Christine McVie since “I’d Rather Go Blind” from her Chicken Shack days can fully revel in the woman’s vocal arrangements and keyboards as never before. For fans who are familiar only with her estimable work on the Fleetwood Mac-Rumours-Tusk trinity and beyond, the songs “Show Me A Smile,” "Why," “Spare Me A Little Of Your Love” and “Come A Little Bit Closer” are truly among her finest compositions. (And the songs “Remember Me” and “Dissatisfied” from Penguin would have fit in nicely on any of those aforementioned albums.)
