Moving into a hundred year old house, I found the X-10 unreliable, so I wanted to upgrade. I did some research, and decided to try out the inexpensive SkylinkHome products.Across the board, the pairing is a huge pain. You need to have all of the devices and all of the remotes together with you so that you can press each remote to configure, then press each device to pair - and repeat with all devices and controllers.Then, you run in to problems, because each device can only be paired so many times before you have to reset it and start over.In particular, the Computer remote SkyLinkHome (which in theory is cool) is annoying, because you have to pair it twice - once as a "remote" and again as the system controller. They are completely separate.But this remote takes the cake. I'm a computer engineer, and have seen many examples of BAD user interfaces (things to not do). This is THE SINGLE WORST User Interface experience I've ever had. There is no chance of figuring it out on your own (self discovery). You have to use the manual. To set the timer, you hit the "Prog" button. To program when which device turns on or off, you hit the "Timer" button. There are separate timer events for "On" and "Off". There are two big buttons - "F" and "0/1" that aren't even used in programming it.Why would you have a timer even that turned something on, that you wouldn't also want to turn it off? Why can't this be ONE event with a turn on and turn off time?Also, as a clock, it should allow for 12 hour (am/pm) or 24 hour display, and should deal with Daylight Savings time. Further, it would be simple to put in a sunlight estimation routine based on putting in a city code so that it could turn on at dusk and off at dawn.As a 9 device remote, it's expensive but ok.
