After hanging it where I did, I realized that the bulb/cord is hanging low enough that when I open my basement bathroom door, it hits the bulb. Rather than risk shattering the bulb and struggling to remove it, I decided on getting a cover. I didn't need anything fancy as it's a laundry room but turns out this is nicer than I expected. I looked at several on Amazon and most were too fancy and expensive for my needs but this is perfect & the price is great. It works exactly as you'd expect. Losen (or remove) the screws, slide it on the socket, tighten screws and insert the bulb. It's a VERY simple cage to put on & looks great too. Now I don't have to worry about someone opening my BR door and shattering the bulb. I also bought one of the long narrow style cages for a mixed look. My review is the same for both models. The cage itself is very nice, strong metal covered with a thick rubbery type of coating that has a glossy finish. As you can see from my pics, the top of the cage attaches to a socket with brass nuts and bolts. This is nice, as it leaves room for using different sockets. You will find links below for all of the products I purchased to make these lamps. One note - The specific socket that I bought is probably a little to big for these cages normally. I had to pull the two parts of the top opening of the cage as wide as I could while a friend pushed the socket in place. As you can see from the closeup, the top part of the cage bows out slightly. I don't think you'd ever notice if you weren't looking for it, but just know they didn't go together very easily. If I had to do it again, I'd probably use a different socket. I think the bulb I used is the perfect size as well...
